UNCLAIMED AND ABANDONED VEHICLES FOR SALE BY COUNCIL

February 13, 2024

Southern Grampians Shire Council is inviting expressions of interest for the purchase of eight unclaimed and abandoned vehicles collected throughout the municipality.

The Community Local Law states that the council must control vehicles that have been left abandoned, unregistered, or dangerously parked within the municipality. This involves the legal impounding of these vehicles, following notice.

If, after three months council is unable to locate the owner of an impounded vehicle via VicRoads, Victoria Police or other means, these vehicles are put up for tender to be sold, in line with council’s general ’Disposal of Assets Policy’.

Council will make the currently impounded vehicles available for inspection on February 28 and 29 by appointment only.

Any vehicle purchases can be made through a bidding process. Once the successful bidder is notified, the vehicle must be paid for and collected no more than seven days after the purchase.

“Following the adoption of the Disposal of Assets late last year, Council can now complete the sale of these vehicles to members of the community,” said Rory Neeson, Director of Wellbeing, Planning and Regulation.

“These vehicles will be priced to ensure that costs incurred by the Council such as towing, storage and administration are covered”.
